Rebel Riddim lines up five singers against a lean 2013 roots cut, with Omar Perry, Da Fuchaman, Ilements and Carmel Zoum all taking turns on the same framework. Reggae Livication Records, the Besançon-based French outfit behind it, describe their work as homemade riddims built in a Jamaican way, and that approach shows here in the plain, sturdy arrangement: no clutter, just a direct bassline, skanking guitar and enough space for the vocals to breathe. Omar Perry’s “Revolutionary” and Da Fuchaman’s “Fire Fire” do a lot of the heavy lifting, while Pressure’s “Jah Love” keeps the tone devotional. It’s a mid-tempo new-roots set with a dry, rolling low end and clipped one-drop pulse that keeps the whole thing moving without ever rushing it.
