Pure Music Productions usually gets tagged to the 2000s and 2010s dancehall side of things, so this Push Come To Shove set has a little extra pull as an older roots-reggae workout from 1986, not the slicker later version that followed. The rhythm has that firm, low-end sway and patient one-drop feel, leaving plenty of room for the voices to do the talking, with Anthony B’s “Babylon We Bun, ” Buju Banton and Luciano on “Whats Wrong, ” and Sizzla’s “Give Thanks For Your Life” among the sharper cuts. The lineup moves from streetwise chat to uplift without losing the groove, and the last stretch lands on Vybz Kartel and Maria’s “Heaven Sent, ” which closes the project with a more melodic turn before the instrumental version lets the riddim breathe on its own.
