Prisoner Riddim – J.R.E Productions

In 2014, when a lot of reggae and dancehall riddims were chasing a lean, digital pulse, J. R. E Productions came with Prisoner, a four-track project that keeps the focus tight and the vibe rough around the edges. The cut has that stripped-down, mid-tempo feel that lets the bassline carry the weight while the vocals stay front and center, and the mix leaves just enough space for each artist to punch through. Dilecious opens with “Fete, ” while Jre’s title track gives the riddim its most direct statement, but Madlock’s “D Road” and Yung Image’s “I Dont Mind” keep the set moving without overcomplicating things. Yung Image closes it out with a cooler, more reflective touch, which suits a project that stays compact and unhurried throughout.
