OK Fred Riddim, issued in 1971 and rooted in Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One circle, pulls together some of the tune’s most familiar versions, including John Holt’s original OK Fred, John Holt and King Stitt’s Redder Than Fred, and later takes by Errol Dunkley, Jackie Edwards, and Jackie Mittoo. The selection moves nicely between singer cuts and deejay style, with the Holt version setting the tone and King Stitt adding one of the sharper contrast pieces on the set. Built around one of Studio One’s most durable late rocksteady-to-reggae foundations, the riddim also reflects how widely the song travelled across labels and reworks in the years that followed.
