OH CAROLINA RIDDIM produced by GREENSLEEVES RECORDS 1993
Oh Carolina Overview
The Oh Carolina Riddim project from 1993 brought a special rocksteady flow to reggae, shaped by Jamaica’s sound system culture. In these dances, selectors would play new riddims, letting each deejay or singer add their own style. The riddim’s deep bass and steady horns made it perfect for big speakers and lively crowds. Behind the mixing board, the dub engineer shaped the sound, using effects and echo to make each track feel alive and different. This careful mixing gave every song its own space while keeping the riddim’s roots strong. Greensleeves Records produced this project. The label started in London in 1977 and became famous for releasing important reggae and dancehall albums, including work with Yellowman and Barrington Levy. Greensleeves helped reggae reach listeners worldwide. The artists on this release each brought something unique. Admiral Bailey’s “Can't Keep A Good Man Down” stands out; he is known for his 1987 hit “Big Belly Man.” Bajja Jedd’s “Bed Work Sensation” and Bounty Killer’s “New Things A Wear” both show the riddim’s energy. Dirtsman offers “Wicked,” while Jimmy London & Daddy Woody team up for “Little Soundboy.” Josey Wales brings “Use Me,” Kulcha Knox delivers “Hot Yah Now,” and Prince Buster’s classic “Oh Carolina” gets a fresh version. Scotty’s “Preacher Man” adds to the lineup, keeping the sound system spirit alive.
