Nyc Overview
In 2008, dancehall fans were treated to a new sound with the release of the Nyc Riddim. Coming out of Jamaica’s vibrant music scene, this riddim gave a fresh edge to bashment parties and radio selectors alike. The production stood out for its sharp drum patterns and clear vocal mixes that made each song hit hard in the dance. On this project, big names took part. Beenie Man delivered “Badman,” adding his established voice and style. Beenie Man is known worldwide as the “King of Dancehall” and won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2001 for his album *Art & Life*. Demarco released “Dem A Fool,” bringing his talent as both a singer and producer. Erup N Mr. Peppa joined forces on “Survival,” giving the riddim even more energy. Spragga Benz offered up “Dem Bow.” He has had a long career in dancehall and appeared on major international collaborations, including working with rapper Foxy Brown on the track “Oh Yeah (Work).” T.O.K dropped “Hustlers,” showing their well-known harmonies that made them one of dancehall’s top groups in the 2000s. Versatile contributed “Make Money,” rounding out the selection with a catchy vibe. Behind it all was VARIOUS ARTISTS, the name often used when multiple established acts are brought together under one project or compilation by producers or labels, especially common in reggae and dancehall when releasing riddim-driven albums featuring many stars. Nyc Riddim fit perfectly into any selector’s setlist during 2008.
