Mushenenene Riddim – Yala Nation

A little over forty-seven cuts deep, Mushenenene Riddim feels like one of those busy ZimDancehall sets where the producer keeps the drum programming tight and lets the singers do the talking. Yala Nation lines up 47 different artists across the project, with names like 2Power on “Lockdown, ” Alligator on “Who Dem Chat, ” and Daddy Simmie’s “Whine Slow” giving the riddim its clearer hooks, while other entries lean harder into Shona titles and local street imagery. The sound sits in that clipped dancehall pocket that favors a stern kick, skittering percussion, and a bass line that doesn’t wander, which is exactly what gives the vocals room to jab and chant over the top. It’s a 2021 production, but it still plays like a proper archive of the year’s Zimbabwe dancehall energy, right down to the blunt, forward-driving low end.
