Morning Rise Riddim Vol. 1 feels more like a gentle roots morning session than the heavier club-minded dancehall Living Room and Spi Music would later be known for, with guitar-led skank, warm bass and a laid-back uplift running through the whole set. New Kingston open the thing nicely on “Key To Life, ” while Ian Sweetness turns “Love Won’t Me Wait” into one of the sweeter cuts, and Sluggy Ranks’ “Rise Again” keeps the title mood front and center. Sidney Mills’ “Rise Dub” gives the project a nice little instrumental breather too, which helps the vocal tracks breathe. Issued in 2016, the riddim gathers a fairly broad lineup, but it stays focused on morning-time reflection, gratitude and love rather than big bashment energy, which is exactly why it still plays easy.
