Mojo Rock Riddim by Studio One 1973-1991
Mojo Rock Overview
The 1991 dub release of the Mojo Rock Riddim brought together some of reggae’s respected artists. Alton Ellis And The Soul Vendors are featured with “Whipping The Prince.” Alton Ellis is often called the “Godfather of Rocksteady” and is known for his classic song “I’m Still In Love With You.” Denise Darlington, who sings “Feel So Good,” adds a soulful touch. Dillinger, famous for his hit “Cocaine in My Brain,” brings energy with “Set Jah Jah Children Free.” Dub Specialist, a name used for Studio One’s in-house producers, appears twice with “Mr Joe” and “Sagittarius Dub5.” Hortense Ellis, who was Alton’s sister and a talented singer herself, delivers “Secretly.” Other songs on the riddim include “They Got To Go” by Hugh Godfrey, “Dub Street” by Johnny, Earl & Johnny, “Rockers Corner” by King Stitt, and “Mojo Rock Steady” by Prince Francis & Sound Dimension. The roots riddim was shaped by Studio One, one of Jamaica’s most important record labels. Studio One, started by Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, is known for launching the careers of Bob Marley & The Wailers and many other reggae stars. The label’s influence on reggae is huge, with many of its classic tracks still sampled today. This dub release helped keep reggae’s roots message strong in 1991, blending classic voices and rhythms for a new generation.
