Matenga Na Gudo Riddim – Chillspot Records

Out of Zimbabwe’s Zimdancehall pocket in 2021, Matenga Na Gudo Riddim found Chillspot Records turning out a hefty 29-cut set that moved between streetwise chants and sweeter melodic turns without losing its local snap. Hwinza’s “Baby Rangu” sits nicely against Gemma Griffiths’ “Maita Basa Baba, ” while Dobba Don and Uncle Epatan lean harder into the rough-edged side of the project, giving the riddim a proper crew feel rather than a string of throwaways. Chillspot had already built a reputation for feeding the scene with sharply pitched dancehall productions, and this one keeps that energy in play, all skanking drums, bright keys and a bassline that stays close to the ground, right down to the last tune.
