Mama Africa Riddim - Bizzarri Records

Bizzarri Records’ Mama Africa Riddim arrived in 2010 with Leo Bizzarri at the controls, and it sits in that late-2000s/early-2010s stretch where roots-minded one-riddim projects were still crossing borders and pulling in voices from Jamaica, Europe and the wider diaspora. The set is all about uplift and identity, with the title cut and the surrounding songs circling Africa, survival, and spiritual grounding.

The instrumental has a warm, mid-tempo reggae sway rather than anything rushed or bashy. It leaves space for melody, but the drum and bass stay firm enough to keep the versions moving, while the keyboard work gives it a polished, modern roots feel. That makes room for the singers to shape the mood in different ways: Ras Tewelde and Jamafrica open with the title song, Lion D turns in the taut “Too Physical, ” and Brusco linking with I-Octane on “Nuh Care” adds a sharper dancehall edge to the same framework. Million Stylez’ “Jah Is Worthy” is one of the cleaner roots statements on the set, while Iba Mahr’s “Fire Inna Rome” pushes a more militant tone into the riddim’s centre.

What gives the release its character is the spread of artists and accents. Italian-reggae names like Brusco, Lion D, Mama Marjas, Fido Guido, and the Bizzarri camp sit beside Jamaican voices such as I-Octane, Khari Kill, Ms Trinity and Iba Mahr, so the project feels less like a simple compilation and more like a transatlantic reggae meeting point. It is the kind of riddim that keeps its message intact while letting each cut carry a slightly different shade.
