Lotus Flower Riddim – Troyton Music

Lotus Flower Riddim finds Troyton Music in familiar territory: a clean, vocal-heavy dancehall juggling with enough swing for the selectors and enough polish for radio. Troy “Troyton” Hinds had already built a name on production work that moved easily between sound system pressure and mainstream reach, and this 2012 set sits neatly inside that lane.

The riddim’s strongest trait is its bounce. It moves with a bright, digital snap rather than a murky basement weight, giving the singers and DJs plenty of room to shape their own personalities around the same core groove. Liquid’s “Broad Out” arrives in both raw and edited versions, a small but telling detail that shows how the rhythm was being tailored for different audiences. Elsewhere, T. O. K turn “10 Grand Fi A Hug” into sharp group business, while Elephant Man brings his usual animated phrasing to “Dance Away, ” pushing the riddim toward pure dancefloor energy.

The line-up is a good snapshot of early-2010s dancehall range. Christopher Martin, the Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer with the radio-friendly touch, suits “Hotta than Dem” with a smoother melodic approach. Alaine gives “Magnet” a feminine polish, Bugle brings his conscious-singjay edge on “Money A Nuh All, ” and Chuck Fenda keeps “Sexy Suh” direct and no-nonsense. Konshens’ presence on G’s “So Sexy” helps round out the set with more contemporary male energy, while Dreama and Beenie Man add extra pull on “Girl U Know. ”

What makes the riddim work is that it never asks every artist to attack it the same way. That variety is the point, and Lotus Flower keeps finding new angles on the same groove without losing its center.
