Looking Glass Riddim – Tj Records

TJ Records’ Looking Glass Riddim landed in 2012 with the kind of sharply cut dancehall pulse the label has long been known for. Linton “TJ” White’s imprint has built its name on rhythm-driven projects that move between street pressure and radio-ready polish, and this one sits comfortably in that lane.

The riddim has a hard, forward-driving swing with a lean digital feel, enough bass weight to keep it rooted in dancehall but plenty of space for the deejays to work their phrasing. Vybz Kartel’s “Looking Glass” gives the project its title and its most obvious centre of gravity, while Popcaan’s “Popcaan Says” brings the youthful Gully/Gaza energy that helped define the period. Konshens turns “Deh Gal Deh” into a slick, flirtatious run, and I-Octane’s “Prefer Death” pushes the mood darker and more defiant. Gaza Slim’s “Muscle Contract” adds another sharp voice to the set, and Tommy Lee’s “Jah Watch Over Me” pulls the riddim into more reflective territory. Masicka’s “Food Alone” is a useful early marker too, coming from a younger artist who was starting to make noise around this time.

What makes the release work is the balance between clash-ready bravado and songs that lean into melody and character. It is a very 2012 dancehall snapshot: Gaza-linked names, strong one-drop energy in the vocal approach, and a producer who knew how to keep a juggling moving without letting any one cut flatten the rest.
