Liberty Riddim – Various Artists

Liberty Riddim comes out of the more militant side of 2008 dancehall, with a compact line-up that leans hard into defiance and self-assertion rather than party chatter. The sharpest cuts here are Vybz Kartel’s “Nah Hold We Down” and Konshens’ “Ago Kill Me, ” both riding the rhythm with the kind of clipped, combative delivery that made that era so potent, while Shane O and Patexx keep the freedom theme moving from different angles. The production has that tense, upfront street feel that was all over late-2000s Jamaican juggling sessions, with enough space in the mix for each artist’s phrasing to cut through. It’s a seven-song set with Sarah Couch, Krymist, Shane O, Cush Heights, Vybz Kartel, Patexx and Konshens in that order.
