Lessons Riddim – Ruff Cutt

Ruff Cutt leaned into roots-conscious reggae here rather than any heavier dancehall push, and that gives Lessons Riddim a more serious, early-2000s soundscape with enough room for the vocals to carry the message. Beres Hammond’s “Say Thank You” is the obvious anchor, warm and polished as you’d expect, while Junior Kelly’s “Jah Live On” and Bongo Kanni’s “Babylon System Wrong” keep the set grounded in hard-nosed uplift and social commentary. Starkey Ranks’ “Blaze Up The Fire” adds a sharper edge, but the sequence stays focused on conscious themes throughout. Teresa Jae closes things out with “We The Innocent, ” a fitting end to a six-cut run that keeps the riddim’s message front and centre.
