Lava Slide Riddim – Faluma Records

Faluma’s Lava Slide Riddim sits right in the label’s 2005 run of soca-leaning Caribbean projects, and this one came out on 7-inch vinyl with eight cuts spread across four singles. Bunji Garlin’s “Whatever” and Skinny Fabulous’ pair “Jook Back” and “Mad” give it the most bite, while Icon’s “Ready” and Peter Ram’s “Dance Instruction” keep the tempo skittering along with that party-ready island pulse. The riddim was produced by Alex Barnwell, aka Kubiyashi Muru, out of St. Vincent, which helps explain the St. Vincent-heavy flavor in the cast and the sharp, sunlit push of the rhythm. The release also folds in Maximus Dan, Tallpree, and Dawg-E-Slaughter, making it a tidy 2005 snapshot of the regional soca-dancehall crossover Faluma was pushing at the time.
