Vybz Kartel gives the House Rat Riddim its sharpest edge, and that’s fitting for a 2006 dancehall cut that keeps the tension up with eight vocal pulls and a clean/rude split from Lexxus. Big Jeans Productions frames the whole thing around a taut, mid-2000s juggling style: Lady Saw’s “Slow Wine” eases into the mix, Tanto Metro and Devonte keep the groove flirtatious on “Want Me To Do, ” and Zumjay leans into the girls-dem angle on “Weh Di Girls Dem Want. ” Kc Jockey’s “Trick Talk” helps set the tone early, but Kartel’s “Gyal Season” is the one that gives the riddim its most memorable lift, riding the rhythm with the kind of cut-through that makes the whole sequence lock in around him.
