Hot Punanny Riddim – Frassout Records

Out of the 2012 dancehall wave, Hot Punanny Riddim comes with a very Caribbean, very bilingual shuffle, pairing Francophone cuts like Kako’s “Chante Bay, ” De Mada Usted’s “Embetant, ” and Specta’s “Tous Les Tues” with harder-edged set pieces from Snyfio, Tai J and Laymess. Frassout Family leans into the old punanny-riddim tradition rather than trying to reinvent it, but the 4 Roads instrumental and the bonus “Hall Roads” and “Roads X” versions give the project a little extra weight at the end. There’s a loose, cheeky energy running through the selection, and the title track sits naturally beside the more explicit anthem-style tunes. In Frassout Records’ catalogue, this lands as one of the label’s early, scene-minded riddims: dancehall with a regional accent, built for the dance and kept close to the classic low-end strain of the punanny line.
