Helmet Riddim – Mount Zion / Oskid Productions

Helmet Riddim came out of Mount Zion and Oskid Productions as a heavy Zimdancehall juggling built for volume, chant, and quick switches. Oskid, whose real name is Prince Tapfuma, has been one of Zimbabwe’s most visible dancehall hitmakers and beatmakers, while Mount Zion Music gives the project its label frame and wider rollout. The riddim was released in 2019, even though it later circulated on 2020 dancehall lists.

What makes it hit is the pressure in the rhythm itself: sharp drum programming, a hard-edged bounce, and enough space for artists to ride it in different voices without losing the backbone. Enzo Ishall’s “Ndoga” is one of the cuts people point to first, and Bazooker’s “Umdhala Wethu” and Ricky Fire’s “Mangoma Mangoma” keep the energy in the same rough, streetwise pocket. Dhadza D and Master H’s “Hatitambe Newe” adds a tighter duet dynamic, while Lady Bee’s “Pikicha” and Ninja Lipsy’s “Slow Down” show the riddim’s range without softening it.

The line-up is strongly Zimbabwean and rooted in the Zimdancehall scene, with names like Hwinza, Sniper Storm, Mbeu, Nicky Vybz and others filling out a long run of versions. That kind of depth gives Helmet Riddim its value: not one anthem, but a whole run of local voices working the same instrumental from different angles.
