The Heartical label joined forces with the Basque Dub Foundation in 2009 to release the Tonight Riddim, a roots reggae project that stands out for its dedication to classic reggae structure. The set features a solid line-up of respected reggae artists, each bringing their own style to the riddim. Michael Rose, known around the world as the lead singer of Black Uhuru, delivers “Hypocrites Warning.” Rose is famous for his Grammy Award with Black Uhuru for Best Reggae Album in 1985. His unique vocal style gives the track a powerful edge. David Hinds from Steel Pulse, a band that broke into the UK Top 40 with their album “Handsworth Revolution,” contributes “Positivity.” Hinds’s smooth delivery and conscious lyrics are a highlight. The Silvertones, a legendary harmony group from Jamaica, offer “Poverty,” staying true to their roots with soulful harmonies. Patrick Andy, whose voice has graced many classic reggae tracks, adds “Go To Do,” while Anthony Johnson, best known for his hit “Gunshot,” brings “Tribulation” to the riddim. Each artist’s contribution keeps the spirit of roots reggae alive. The Basque Dub Foundation, led by arranger Inyaki Yarritu, shaped the sound of the riddim with authentic live instrumentation and classic reggae arrangements.
