HARD COPY RIDDIM 2003

Producer credits aren’t widely attached to Hard Copy Riddim, but the 2003 three-cut dancehall set still has that early-digital sting: sparse, bright, and driven by a clipped drum pattern that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to cut through. Lava Man’s “Move Up” comes off like the most immediate tune here, while Simma gets two runs, “Hot Gal” and “Only One, ” which give the riddim a bit more personality and range without crowding the arrangement. It’s a small release, but that was part of the moment in dancehall at the time, when compact juggling sets and raw, functional rhythms were still doing heavy lifting on the street and in the dance.
