HANDSWORTH REVOLUTION RIDDIM produced by PENTHOUSE 1995
Handsworth Revolution Overview
In the mid-1990s, reggae music was exploring new sounds, but the roots of rocksteady were still strong. The rocksteady flow, known for its calm and steady rhythm, gave artists a space to express deep feelings and social messages. In 1995, this classic style was brought back to life through a special project that highlighted the roots side of reggae. The producer behind this project was PENTHOUSE, a well-known name in reggae music. PENTHOUSE Records, founded by Donovan Germain in 1987, became famous for its clean sound and for helping many artists reach new audiences. The label has produced many hits and is respected for its role in shaping modern reggae and dancehall. On this roots riddim, two important artists stood out: Buju Banton and Wayne Wonder. Buju Banton, a major figure in reggae, brought his unique voice and energy to the song "Bad Boy." Buju Banton is known for his album "Til Shiloh," which is seen as a classic in reggae music. Wayne Wonder, another respected singer, added his smooth vocals to the track "Emptiness." Wayne Wonder later found international success with the hit song "No Letting Go" in 2003. This 1995 project proved that roots reggae and the rocksteady flow still had the power to move people and keep the culture alive.
