Guilty Riddim – Various Artists

Guilty Riddim comes off a little rougher and more straight-to-the-point than some of the slicker early-2000s dancehall projects, which fits the era it landed in. With only five cuts, it doesn’t waste time: Mad Family’s “Wine U Waist” is the most immediate selection here, all thrust and waistline business, while Mario Castle gets two shots and keeps the energy up on “Shake It” and “Wine Go Down. ” Reactor’s “Guilty” leans into the title with a darker edge, and Undertaker’s “Condoms” gives the set a cheeky, cautionary twist that feels very of-the-moment for 2004. It’s a compact little snapshot of dancehall in that period, when riddim tapes and single-song statements still carried plenty of weight.
