GIBRALTA RDDIM – BLACK SCORPIO 1995
Gibralta Rddim – Black Scorpio Overview
In the mid-1990s, dancehall music was full of energy and excitement. This was the time when bashment rhythms were popular at yard sessions across Jamaica. The Gibralta Riddim, released in 1995, was one of the rhythms that stood out. The riddim came from Black Scorpio, a well-known label in dancehall history, founded by Maurice “Jack Scorpio” Johnson. Black Scorpio was famous for producing many big dancehall tracks during this era. On this riddim, Lt Stitchie brought his song "Be Humble." Lt Stitchie is known for his fast lyrical style and was already a star in dancehall, with hits like "Wear Yu Size" in his career. Mega Banton, another strong voice in dancehall, gave fans two tracks on the riddim: "Mr Madden" and "Tatty." Mega Banton became famous in the 1990s for his deep voice and songs such as "Sound Boy Killing." Wickerman’s "Pose Pon Dem" added more energy to the tape. Wickerman was known for his clever lyrics and lively performances. This yard session tape quickly became a favorite in local parties. The combination of these artists and the Gibralta Riddim made it a standout moment for bashment music in 1995. The tape still brings back memories of that special time in dancehall.
