Fresh Air Riddim – Young Blood

Fresh Air is one of those early-2000s reggae juggling plates that keeps the focus on the vocals rather than any big studio trickery, with Young Blood laying down a clean, rootsy backdrop and five cuts including Diana on “Down Here, ” Ingel Chanter’s “Di Youths Dew Want, ” Lion Heart’s “It’s You, ” and Natural Blacks on “Free Again. ” Natural Blacks is the name that jumps out here, and his turn on “Free Again” sits nicely against the mellow pulse of the riddim, which leaves plenty of room for each singer to stretch out without crowding the groove. There’s also a straight instrumental pass, “Version, ” that lets the pattern breathe on its own and shows how spare the production is.
