Big Youth’s “Tings Fren” gives Fren Riddim its sharpest pull, and that’s fitting for a Crystal Records set that keeps the focus tight: just four cuts, with Luciano and Derrick Harriott pairing up on “Rasta Man Soul” in both kette and vocal mixes before the version closes things out. The production sits in that clean, roots-leaning Crystal lane, more lean and meditative than the heavier digital dancehall that would come to dominate the mid-2000s, which makes the Big Youth cut feel even more pointed.
