Vybz Kartel’s “Mama” is the sharpest hook on Fight Fi War Riddim, and it’s the tune that gives the whole 2008 TJ Records set its pull. Around him, Blak Rhyno’s “Money Haffi Mek” and Jah Vinci’s “Money” keep the talk on ambition and survival, with Jah Vinci’s cut carrying that plaintive, melodic edge he was already starting to own. TJ Records keeps the rhythm tight and militant rather than flashy, the kind of dancehall backdrop that leaves room for the lyrics to do the heavy lifting, and Kartel’s tune cuts through it with that cold, clipped authority. It’s only three tracks, but the little selection has a focused, street-level feel, with the Kartel song doing most of the damage.
