Duck Riddim (2010) – Penthouse Records

Penthouse turned the Duck Riddim into another sharp 2010 update of a classic dancehall swing, this time recutting the old Duck Dance pattern with the kind of polished, radio-ready finish Donovan Germain has long been known for. Germain built Penthouse into one of the most durable names in Jamaican dancehall, and the label’s late-80s-to-2000s catalogue is full of sleek digital productions and big-name combinations. This version sits comfortably in that lineage, pairing nostalgia with contemporary vocals rather than treating the rhythm like a museum piece.

The groove is bright and springy, with a bouncing midtempo pull that leaves plenty of room for phrasing and personality. Busy Signal’s Food Fi The Pot is the most immediate cut, riding the riddim with his trademark patter and everyday-greedy-living imagery. Elephant Man’s Gal Yuh Ave Yuh Own brings the usual animated chatter and crowd-lifting energy, while Mr G’s Guilty Mouth and Camille Davis’ Another Sad Love Song give the project a little more range in tone. The instrumental helps underline how cleanly the riddim has been rebuilt: taut drums, clipped accents, and enough space in the low end to keep the whole thing moving without sounding crowded.

What makes the release work is the mix of veteran star power and a few less obvious voices on the same foundation. It is not one of Penthouse’s biggest riddim events, but it is a neat reminder of how the label could take an old dancehall idea and make it feel current again.
