Deception Riddim (2008) – Camjari Music Group

Four voices and four different angles on the same riddim make Deception a compact little 2008 set, with Amique, Jah Vison, Duane Stephenson, and To Isis each taking a turn over Camjari Music Group’s production. Duane Stephenson’s “Your Love Is Calling” feels like the anchor here, bringing his smoother, more rootsy touch to a project that otherwise keeps its focus on conscious themes, from Jah Vison’s “Feeling The Vibes” to To Isis’ “Ghetto Prayer. ” The riddim itself sits in that sturdy mid-2000s reggae pocket, warm and measured rather than flashy, which leaves room for the vocals to carry the weight and for the lyrics to do the talking. It’s a short set, but the sequencing keeps it tight: “Deception” opens the door, “Feeling The Vibes” and “Your Love Is Calling” push it forward, and “Ghetto Prayer” closes the circle.
