Darknite Riddim – Greenlite Studio

Darknite lands a little rougher and more streetwise than a lot of Greenlite Studio’s cleaner dancehall work, with a dark, late-night pulse that suits the 2010 era well. The release lines up eight cuts, but it doesn’t feel crowded; the focus stays on a tight set of voices, and Shawn Storm’s “Money First” gives the riddim one of its sharpest moments. Greenlite’s own title cut closes things out, which feels intentional, like the producer wanted the instrumental to sit as the statement after the voices have done their talking. With Flazzout and Blenz, Kojo and Vil Digit, and Luddy Haskell in the mix, the tracklist moves from girl talk to hustler talk without losing that shadowy mood, and the sequencing keeps the energy leaning forward rather than spinning in circles.
