Run Things Records kept the Crown Riddim session lean in 2004, and that’s part of its charm: just four cuts, with Wayne Lonesome carrying the biggest share of the work through “Buckle Up” and “Crown, ” both riding the same hard little dancehall groove. “Cain” from Early Out adds a different angle, but it’s the Lonesome pair that gives the riddim its identity, one song sounding like a blunt warning and the other leaning more into the swagger. There’s also the version cut, which lets the bare rhythm speak for itself and makes it easy to hear the swing in the drums and the clipped bass line. Coming out in the middle of that busy 2004 dancehall run, Crown feels like one of those compact label drops built for soundsystem play rather than big compilation ceremony.
