Penthouse’s College Rock is one of those late-90s revivals that still feels cut from classic Kingston cloth. Donovan Germain had already spent years turning Penthouse into one of the most important reggae camps of the era, known for a clean, polished sound and for pairing strong singers with disciplined riddim work. This version sits in the label’s long line of refurbishing older foundation patterns for a new generation.
The cut list tells the story. Buju Banton’s “Buju Movin” brings the deejay energy and forward motion that made his Penthouse years so dominant. Garnet Silk’s “Commitment” gives the rhythm a rootsier, more devotional pull, while Sanchez’s “One In A Million” pushes it back toward the smooth lovers side of the lane. Thriller U’s “Starting All Over” adds polished vocal control, and Leroy Sibbles’ “You Turn Me On” ties the project to reggae’s deeper history through one of the genre’s most revered voices. Terry Ganzie’s “Signal The Warning” brings sharper tension and a more militant edge. Jackie Mittoo’s “Freak Out” is the outlier in the best way, linking the riddim back to the instrumental tradition that helped define Jamaican music in the first place.
What makes College Rock work is the balance: rooted bassline, bright melodic movement, and enough space for singers, deejays, and legends to each leave a different imprint. It plays like a reminder that Penthouse knew how to make a heritage rhythm feel current without sanding off its character.
