Tuff Nut Studio’s Catalyst Riddim leans more toward a lean, straight-ahead roots set than the heavier dancehall pressure the name might suggest, with seven voices riding a fairly brisk cut that keeps the message front and center. King David’s “Freedom” and Bongo Man’s “Better Will Come One Day” carry the kind of hopeful, conscious writing that anchors the whole thing, while Ziggy’s “Jah Is” and Preston’s “Lies” push the spiritual and social angles a little harder. Marley’s “Wah Do Dem” gives the sequence a sharper edge, and the instrumental at the end leaves the riddim exposed in a way that shows how tightly the production is locked in. It’s a compact 2008 set, but the pacing and the vocal mix keep it moving with purpose.
