Cassava Riddim – Macten Records

Bushman’s “College Rock” gives Cassava Riddim its sharpest opening move, and from there Macten Records keeps the set in a classic roots-reggae pocket with six cuts total, including Dave B’s “Envious Record, ” Law Giver’s “So Nice To See, ” Little Hero’s “Cry Fi Di Poor, ” P Zed’s title track and the version. The rhythm dates to 2009, even though this Macten Records presentation surfaced in 2021, which gives it that slightly time-capsule feel common to well-kept Jamaican compilation pieces. Little Hero is the other name that pulls focus here, his poverty-conscious “Cry Fi Di Poor” sitting naturally against Bushman’s more schoolyard-minded turn, while P Zed’s “Cassava” keeps the project anchored to the riddim itself and closes the circle neatly.
