Capital P Riddim – Vp Records

VP Records’ Capital P Riddim came out in 2006 as part of the label’s Riddim Driven series, and it sits in the classic Steely and Clevie school of dancehall production: a rebuilt version of the old Punanny pattern with a tougher, more digital sheen. The rhythm has that clipped, springy bounce that lets the drums snap forward while the bass stays heavy and dry, so the vocals can ride either cocky and militant or playful and sly without getting crowded out.

The project pulls in a proper cross-section of the scene: Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Anthony B, Ce’Cile, Alozade, Future Troubles, Buccaneer, Kiprich and Bad Juvenile, Mr. Vegas, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica, Hollow Point, and others. That mix gives the riddim different angles, from Buju Banton’s “Adult Rated” and “Beat One” to Bounty Killer’s “Cry Till She Cough, ” which sharpens the sexual edge of the rhythm into something more combative. Kiprich and Bad Juvenile’s “Dugu Dugu Ting” rides the groove with pure dancehall mischief, while Anthony B and Tony Rebel pull it back toward conscience and straight talk.

The lineup also shows how flexible the riddim is: Ce’Cile’s “Miss Dynamite” brings attitude, Alozade’s “Screw Face” keeps the badman tension alive, and Future Troubles’ “Wrong Half” adds another rough-edged twist. It is a VP package, but the real identity comes from Steely and Clevie’s production and the way the voices bounce off that revived Punanny framework.
