Buss Out Riddim lands right in the middle of that late-’90s Firehouse Crew run where live-rooted musicianship and digital-era economy meet in the same groove. Firehouse Crew were already established as one of Jamaica’s key studio bands by then, and their work around Xterminator and related roots productions had made their name familiar to anyone following the heavier, conscious side of reggae. By 1997, they were part of the machinery behind a stream of records that kept roots music moving without sounding dusty or overworked.

The riddim itself has that firm, marching feel Firehouse were known for: drums and bass locked close, bright keyboard touches, and a forward motion that leaves room for singers to stretch out without the rhythm ever loosening. It’s not a frantic dancehall cut; the energy is steadier, more meditative, and that makes the voices matter even more. The tune that gives the set its title, Half Pint’s “Buss Out, ” sits naturally in his long-running catalog of melodic, socially aware reggae. His voice brings warmth and authority, the kind of phrasing that can make a simple hook feel earned.

Luciano and Sizzla’s “Build A Better World” is the cut most people will point to first, and for good reason. Luciano’s roots tenor and Sizzla’s sharper, more urgent delivery make a strong contrast, turning the song into a call-and-response of hope and pressure rather than just another conscious anthem. Glamma Murphy’s “Red Light” gives the rhythm a tougher edge, while Lukie D’s “You Got It Goin’ On” smooths things out with his sweeter, lover-friendly style. That balance is part of the riddim’s appeal: it can carry uplift, romance, and streetwise warning without losing its identity. For a four-cut set, it says a lot about how well Firehouse could make a single groove feel bigger than the sum of its parts.
