Boom Box Riddim – Notnice Records

Notnice Records had one of dancehall’s sharpest ears in the early 2010s, and Boom Box Riddim sits right in that pocket. Released in 2014, the set comes from Ainsley “Notnice” Morris’ Jamaica-based imprint, a label already known for clean, hard-edged productions that move easily from sound system pressure to digital replay. This one runs on a taut, bass-heavy juggling with crisp drums and a bright, stripped-back bounce that leaves space for each voice to cut through.

The lineup is front-loaded with artists who knew how to turn a riddim into a moment. Alkaline lands twice with Scumbag and Gyal Bruk Out, capturing the sharper, colder side of his early rise. Spice turns So Mi Like It into one of the project’s most memorable cuts, riding the riddim with the kind of confidence and bite that helped define her crossover era. Beenie Man brings veteran polish on What Is This and joins Cee Gee on Roll Pan It Gyal, while Chico’s Tight Pussy Gyal adds a rawer street-level charge. I-Octane’s Wi Bad gives the set a tougher, more militant edge.
