Balaffa Riddim – Ajang Records

Ajang Records keeps Balaffa Riddim lean and sharp: just four cuts, with Cutty Ranks, Nikki Burt and General Levy, Phoebe One, and Sizzla all taking a turn over the same 2004 dancehall framework. The rhythm has that early-2000s UK-meets-yard feel, punchy and digital with enough space for the voices to do the heavy lifting, while the title track mood hangs around the harder-edged side of the era rather than anything glossy. Cutty Ranks’ “Too Much Guns In Town” lands with the most bite, and the Nikki Burt/General Levy pairing on “Man Like You” gives the project a nice crossover spark. Phoebe One keeps it lively on “Bounce To This, ” before Sizzla closes with “Swollow Field (Refix), ” which ties the whole set back to the raw, street-level energy Ajang was chasing here.
