Africana Riddim – Yard A Love Records

2012 was still a year when straight-ahead conscious reggae riddims had room to breathe, and Africana fits that moment with a lean lineup and a rootsy pulse that leaves space for the singers to do the talking. Capleton’s “Live As One” gives the set its most familiar fire, all uplift and steely conviction, while Teflon’s “From I Have Jah” leans more reflective and spiritual, riding the groove with a softer edge. Fiyah Chriss and One Cent’s “Dem Nuh True” keeps the social commentary front and center, so the riddim never feels like background music; it’s there to carry messages. Yard A Love Records kept the cast tight here, which helps the whole thing move like a proper small-label release from that era: no waste, just a handful of voices locking into the same frame.
