Tonight Riddim (2022) – Penthouse Records

85 BPM · 6A 2022 Reggae 4 cuts

Penthouse Records dusted off a familiar lovers-rock pulse for Tonight Riddim in 2022, and the result sits comfortably in Donovan Germain’s long line of sleek, melody-driven reggae productions. Germain has been one of the defining architects of modern Jamaican label work, and Penthouse has spent decades pairing clean musicianship with radio-ready hooks and strong vocal names.

This one moves with a soft, late-night sway rather than a heavy one-drop push. The arrangement leaves plenty of air around the kick and bass, while the keys and guitar phrasing give it that polished Penthouse sheen. It is the kind of riddim that invites singers to stretch out their phrasing and lean into heartbreak, longing, and relationship talk without clutter.

Bugle and Dexta Daps make the strongest impact with “Saddest Day, ” a pairing that brings Bugle’s measured edge and Dexta Daps’ more raw, emotive delivery into the same space. Duane Stephenson and Exco Levi take “That’s What She Loves” into smoother territory, with Stephenson’s rich tenor giving the cut warmth and Exco Levi adding balance. D-Major’s “Don’t Need Your Loving” keeps the sentiment direct and plaintive, while Slashe’s “Don’t Let Go” fits the riddim’s tender mood with an easy, unforced vocal.

Tonight Riddim works because it does what Penthouse has always done well: give the singers a polished canvas and let the voice carry the emotion.
