Raw Moon Overview
The roots drop appeared in Jamaica in 2008, bringing together some of reggae’s respected voices and new talents. This project was centered on the Raw Moon Riddim, a smooth, foundation-style rhythm that captured the classic reggae sound. Bertus added his voice with "My Diary," a song reflecting his storytelling style. Lutan Fyah, known for his conscious lyrics and earlier hits like "St. Jago De La Vega," contributed "Mama Dont Cry" to the lineup. Cocoa Tea, one of reggae’s well-known veterans and famous for hits such as "Rikers Island" and "Tune In," brought forward "Raw Moon." Nickiesha Barnes performed "Its True," showcasing her vocal abilities among more established artists. Shadrokk offered "Im Sorry" on this platform as well. Other voices included One Third with "Holding Back The Years," Heather Cummings delivering "I Believe," bridging experience and fresh input across the selection. MASTER KAT PRODUCTIONS handled the overall production. This label is recognized for putting out several foundation riddims and has worked steadily within Jamaica’s independent music scene. Their productions often highlight both seasoned and emerging artists without much fanfare but with consistent quality. The selector chose tracks that kept to the Raw Moon Riddim throughout, preserving unity across different singers’ styles. By using a single riddim, the project helped listeners compare the unique strengths each artist brought. In 2008, this roots drop quietly supported reggae’s daily soundtrack, showing how foundation rhythms still shape the genre’s sound and give space to voices both old and new.
