ZIMFEST RIDDIM (ZIMDANCEHALL) – CHILLSPOT RECORDZ 2019

By the time Zimfest Riddim landed in 2019, Chillspot Recordz had already turned out a string of Zimdancehall compilations, and this one sits right in that lane: a tightly packed local showcase with Enzo Ishall, Jah Master, Hwinza, K Commander and others riding the same instrumental. The beat has that unmistakable Harare grit, with clipped drum programming, a rolling bassline and a lean, looping keyboard figure that leaves plenty of room for the voicings. Enzo Ishall’s “Simbisa Musana” and Jah Master’s “Ukululu” fit the rhythm especially well, but the whole set feels designed for chant-heavy, street-facing performances rather than polished crossover polish. Even the titles point back to the language and humour of the scene, while the production keeps the tempo brisk and the bass pattern heavy enough to carry every hook.
