Zess Riddim – Wmg Lab

WMG Lab’s Zess Riddim landed in 2020 as a lean dancehall set with five cuts and no wasted space. The label had already been working a zess-minded lane before this, and here the approach is stripped back and party-first, with the production pushing a fast, punchy groove that leaves room for quick-fire hooks and blunt patois turns. The result is less about polish than pressure: music for the dance, built to move a crowd rather than sit quietly in the background.

The lineup is Grill on Ice O Late, Bubbles on Tight and Clean, C4 on Take Back Shot, Nickoh on Bounce and Grind, and Jahma on Tap Out. Nickoh’s cut had already circulated as Bounce and Grind on the Corona Zess version, while Bubbles, C4, Grill, and Jahma all sit inside the same WMG Lab riddim family. Bubbles brings the most immediately memorable hook, with the title alone doing a lot of the work, while Grill’s Ice O Late has the kind of late-night, rude-boy energy that gives the riddim its edge. C4’s Take Back Shot pushes the same raw dancehall charge, and Jahma’s Tap Out closes things with a direct, no-nonsense finish.

As a project, Zess Riddim fits the early-2020s wave of harder dancehall that traded in brisk tempos, short songs, and crowd-ready slogans. WMG Lab keeps it tight and functional, and that economy is exactly what gives the riddim its bounce.
