Vacation Riddim (2016) – Shs Records

Vacation mode. SHS Records keeps this 2016 soca set bright and breezy, but there’s a little more muscle under the polish than the title suggests: the riddim has that sun-drenched, getaway feel, with a steady bounce that leaves room for vocals to shine without getting too glossy. Bugle’s “Clean Heart” and Zagga’s “Let’s Run Away” lean into the singalong side, while CK’s “Stress Free” and Iceman’s “Today” keep the mood light and easygoing. Jordanne Patrice’s “Crazy Crush” adds a sweeter, more romantic touch, and Voicemail’s “Jamdown” with Chevaughn gives the compilation its most obvious hook. The set’s small lineup works in its favor, keeping the pacing tight and giving each cut enough space to land, which was very much the vibe in mid-2010s soca when producer-driven riddims were leaning hard into catchy, vacation-ready hooks.
