What makes Tougher Love a little different from some of High Stakes’ tougher, more overtly dancehall-leaning work is the way it sits in a more measured reggae pocket, with a tidy eight-cut set that leans on message tunes as much as attitude. Munga’s “After 7, ” Voicemail’s “Lie Down, ” and Kabaka Pyramid’s “Seek Knowledge” do a lot of the heavy lifting, while Tifa and Kari Jess keep the vocal edge sharp on “So Tired” and the two versions of “We Nuh Give A. ” The production has that compact, late-2000s Kingston feel: clipped drums, a steady bass pulse, and just enough melodic detail to keep the rhythm moving without crowding the voices. At 168 BPM, the riddim still carries a brisk step, but it stays locked in a clean, straight-ahead groove.
