The Exhaust Riddim – Various Artists

Coming out of the 2004 dancehall run, The Exhaust Riddim sits in the rough-and-ready end of the era’s juggling culture, with seven cuts and six artists across the set. The names are mostly mid-tier voices — Chief on “Watts Good, ” Gadget on “Water Wave, ” Plucky Ranks on “Smoke It, ” Sample Kid on “Girls Call, ” plus the Chief and Tina combination tune “Aint No Doub” — but the interest here is the riddim’s plain, functional pressure rather than any star turn. It feels like a stripped-down street rhythm built for sound-system play, with a tight kick-snare pattern, a blunt bassline, and enough empty space for the deejays to work the pocket. Tina’s “There When I Need” and Twiin Touch ft. Omeil’s “On Toni” keep the vocal approach direct and clipped, which suits the tempo and the dry, forward-driving bounce that holds the whole set together.
