Sym Riddim – Various Artists

Two cuts make up Sym Riddim, so this one lands more like a tight little dancehall slice than a sprawling various-artists set. Chucky’s “Ridiculous” and Steve I’s “Heya Heya” ride a lean, no-frills groove that keeps the focus on the hook and the forward motion, with just enough pressure in the low end to keep it squarely in bashment territory. It’s the kind of 2012 riddim package that doesn’t waste time on extras; the appeal is in how quickly it gets to the point and how little fat it leaves on the bone. Chucky brings the sharper, more animated turn on the first cut, while Steve I closes things out with a chanty, easy-to-grab refrain that feels built for sound system play.
