From the Kingston dancehall circuit of 1989, Super Stars Hit Parade Vol. 7 catches King Jammy’s Super Power camp in one of its sharpest compilation moods, packing ten cuts across seven voices and a couple of dubby detours. Bunny General sets the tone with “D. J. With The Stamina” and “Different Slang, ” while Conroy Smith’s “Modonna My Love” and “Tonight Is The Night” keep the side moving with that hard, late-80s digital pulse. Gregory Isaacs’ “First Degree Murder” gives the set a star turn, and Johnny Osbourne’s “The Juggling Steep” leans into the kind of rough-hewn dancehall craft Jammy was refining throughout this run. The two King Jammy instrumentals, “Iron Gate Dub” and “My Teng, ” also hint at how these compilations doubled as a showcase for the label’s sound, not just its singers.
