SPEEDOMETER RIDDIM produced by JONES AVE RECORDS 2014

Jones Ave Records kept the Speedometer Riddim moving in 2014 with a dancehall juggling that is more muscular than flashy, all sharp-edged synth lines, quick percussion and a steady forward thrust that suits the title. The instrumental has a clipped, street-facing energy that leaves room for each deejay to ride the pocket without cluttering it.

The lineup is tight and properly chosen: Vybz Kartel on “Speedometer Bunup, ” I-Octane on “Any Bwoy, ” Shawn Storm on “Roll, ” and Likkle Dainjah on “Run Dem Dung. ” Kartel’s cut is the obvious anchor, with that cold, commanding delivery that made him such a dominant force in modern dancehall. I-Octane brings a more measured tone and a tougher conversational style, which gives “Any Bwoy” a different weight. Shawn Storm and Likkle Dainjah keep the energy rugged and direct, both sounding comfortable over a rhythm that favours patter, menace and quick-witted phrasing.

What gives the riddim its character is the way it holds together as a dubplate-ready dancehall piece rather than trying to sound glossy or overworked. Released in 2014 and issued as a Jones Ave Records set, it fits the era when hard digital riddims were still a reliable way to get a handful of voices onto one strong frame and let the artists carry the personalities.
