“Shooter” points to the hard-line side of Demarco’s dancehall vocabulary: a title made for an artist who has long understood the force of a clipped phrase, a stark threat and a memorable melody. He has never been confined to one temperature, though. The same Portmore deejay who made the solemn “Fallen Soldiers” also carried the combative edge of “Duppy Know Ah Who Fi Frighten, ” then shifted gears for crowd records such as “Puppy Tail” and the affirmation of “I Love My Life. ”
He is also one of the comparatively few front-line artists of his generation whose production sense is part of the identity, not a separate sideline. Demarco has spoken of finding a melody by feeling out a riddim first, humming until the shape of a chorus or verse reveals itself. “Shooter” sits under that larger Demarco banner: direct, charged and rooted in an artist who can move between menace, melody and dancefloor command without losing his stamp.
